Frequently Asked Technical Question's

Question:
How secure is the MegaBroadband Network?

Answer:
The MegaBroadband network uses built-in security mechanisms to minimize the possibility of security breaks from within the network. These mechanisms include the use of proprietary air interfaces between MegaBroadband's base stations and customer modems, beam pointing technology to direct signals to the location where customer modems are placed, traffic broadcast filters and authentication technology.

Question:
Someone told me that wireless networks are insecure. Is that true?

Answer:
There are many types of wireless networks and each of them has its own mechanism for dealing with security. You may find that general statements regarding wireless network security are referring to the 802.11-family of products. MegaBroadband Wireless network does not use the 802.11-family of protocols and is as secure as any cable or wire-based broadband service.

Question:
Am I open to virus attacks?

Answer:
All computers on the Internet are exposed to dangers such as viruses and worms. This is the case regardless of whether you connect to the internet using ADSL, cable or the MegaBroadband service. There are a number of important steps you should take to protect your computer:

  • If you are running Windows, make sure you regularly update your computer with the latest Critical Update patches from Microsoft.
  • Install anti-virus software on your PC and make sure you keep it regularly up-to-date with the latest virus information (This feature is built in to most anti-virus software).
  • Purchase a firewall for your computer. We recommend that you purchase a software based firewall solution to run on your computer. If your have a home/office network you should purchase a hardware based firewall to run on your networking equipment in order to protect all of your computers.

In addition, when you are on the internet you should be very careful about downloading and installing/running programs on your PC unless you are confident that they are from a responsible source. You should also be careful when opening emails from people you do not know or who have no reason to email you. It may be better to delete these emails without opening them.

Question:
Is my machine easily accessible by others on the same network?

Answer:
No, your machine is no more accessible to other MegaBroadband Wireless users than it is to any Internet users. MegaBroadband Wireless is as secure as any cable or wire-based broadband service.

Question:
What is the MegaBroadband Modem?

Answer:
The MegaBroadband Ripwave Modem is different from standard DSL or Cable modems traditionally used to connect to Broadband today. The modem utilises wireless technology and connects to MegaBroadband Base Stations (towers) located around the service area. Because it does not rely on a phone line or cable connection you do not have to wait to activate your service. Also, once you have signed up for your MegaBroadband service you can use it from anywhere within the MegaBroadband coverage area.

Question:
How do I address signal strength problems?

Answer:
The indicator lights on the front of the modem provide information on signal strength. Please refer to our quick troubleshooting guide for information on how to determine signal strength and how to adjust the modem.
