Frequently Asked Questions about MegaBroadband
Question: What is MegaBroadband?
Answer: MegaBroadband offers the same great features of other broadband connections available today. The incredibly fast speeds and 'always on' features are the same as those offered by cable or DSL broadband technologies. However, the similarities stop there.
Our customers connect to high speed internet wirelessly over the air, rather than through a phone line or cable. This means that you get all the benefits of traditional broadband at a fraction of the cost and the portability and freedom that only wireless broadband can offer.
Question: Does the MegaBroadband Modem require a clear Line of Sight to the Base Station?
Answer: No, MegaBroadband is a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS), zero-install system, and uses patented beam forming technology which provides greater signal strength than traditional wireless systems to remove the requirement for direct line of sight (LOS) inherent in other Wireless Broadband systems. As with any radio-based system, however, the closer and less obstructed the path is from transmitter to receiver, the better the signal will be.
Question: Will the new wireless system work with my existing computer?
Answer: Yes, The minimum system requirements are:
- 32mb of RAM
- 50mb Hard Drive Space (for monitoring software)
- Ethernet Card
- Pentium level Processor or Better
Question: How do I find out whether or not I am in a coverage area?
Answer: Call the MegaBroadband Helpline and we can determine if the system is deployed in your area.
Question: If MegaBroadband is wireless can I move my Wireless Modem?
Answer: With MegaBroadband you aren't limited to using your broadband connection within just your home. Wherever you take your MegaBroadband modem within our entire coverage area you will have instant access to your broadband connection.
Question: Why choose wireless vs. DSL or Cable?
Answer: Wireless solutions cost less, provide superb service, and have low maintenance costs. The performance can be engineered to equal or exceed that traditionally provided by DSL or Cable Systems. In addition, wireless technology is increasingly portable, allowing the user to obtain access in many locations rather than being tied to the end of a cable.
Question: How does this Wireless Technology work?
Answer: MegaBroadband is a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) system which works very similar to a cell phone. Wireless technologies differ from wired technologies in that they do not rely on twisted pair wires, coaxial cables, or optical fiber as a medium for transporting signals. Instead, they transmit radio-frequency (RF) signals - a form of electromagnetic energy - through the atmosphere to equipment that is tuned to receive those signals.
Question: Are wireless networks safe to use from a health perspective, since they use Radio Frequencies?
Answer: The MegaBroadband system and devices are safe when used under normal operating conditions and as stated in the user manuals. The power levels are below the power level of a typical microwave oven. Independent test labs have tested the radio modules to ensure compliance with Federal regulations.
Question: My Laptop is equipped with WiFi. Is MegaBroadband a wireless connection to my laptop?
Answer: No, MegaBroadband is a wireless broadband connection to your MegaBroadband modem. As with most standard broadband modems you must still attach your modem to your computer via an Ethernet or USB cable. You can attach a wireless gateway router to your MegaBroadband modem if your computer has a WiFi card or adaptor and you wish to connect it to your modem without cables.
